The History of the Victorian Glasshouse by Mike Beech
In this talk we start by looking at the early history, from around 1550, of the area of London near Fleet Street where Whitefriars glass works originated. We see how a small jobbing glasshouse producing largely utilitarian glassware, developed into one of Europe’s most creative and innovative producers of top quality Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau glass. We also look at how the Powell family, using their position and status within the artistic community of Victorian London, were able to determine the direction and importance of this great glasshouse. From the mid 1800’s famous artists including Burne-Jones, Henry Holiday and Rossetti produced for Whitefriars, some of this country’s most beautiful stained glass windows – we look at how they were designed and made. Finally, we look at life in a Victorian/Edwardian glass house, where, despite the Dickensian working conditions, the artists and craftsmen managed to produce glasswork of such fine skill and delicacy.
